ABSENT THE PLAY
Dreams do come true after all…
We are a trio of female artists; Betool Khedairi, Penny Black and Svetlana Dimcovic, collaborating across borders, building bridges between the Arab world and European theatre cultures. Over the past ten years we have been developing a stage version of Betool’s novel, ABSENT.
This is a coming-of-age story of Dalal, a seventeen year old orphaned Iraqi girl, with a facial disfigurement set in 90s Baghdad under American bombing and terrible sanctions. It is told with humour and resilience, a story of survival, friendship, and betrayal. It is staged in poor theatre aesthetics echoing the devastation and displacement of war.
Originally adapted as a full-cast play by Betool in Amman and Penny in London, followed by Svetlana inviting us to Belgrade for a workshop where we completed the script with her directorial vision. Unfortunately, the pandemic struck and theatres closed. We still felt this piece about a world seen through a teenager’s eyes would give opportunities to young Arab talent to get involved in expressing their identity, so we soldiered on.
It was then re-written as a one woman show during lockdown, and premiered in London in November 2025 opening the VOILA international festival. It was an experience of total girl power; novelist/co-writer Betool Khedairi, translator/playwright Penny Black and director/producer Svetlana Dimcovic. ABSENT is no longer absent and the adventure is going on tour.

FROM NOVEL TO PLAY
Form-Idea magazine. Article by Beverly Andrews. "Absent – Iraqi War Drama Brought Powerfully To The Stage".
(…) Like a Chekhov ensemble, the characters in Absent are defined by longing—not for a distant place, but for a time before conflict reshaped their existence.
(…) In its atmosphere of surveillance, suspicion, and eroding integrity, Absent recalls the tone of East German theatre and film produced before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
(…) Absent is an exquisitely crafted work that leads audiences beyond political headlines and into the intimate daily realities of ordinary Iraqis. It reminds us that their desires mirror those of people everywhere—but that their lives have been repeatedly reshaped and unsettled by forces far beyond their control.
Dr. Ihsan Fethi
(…) it may be the first time ever that an Iraqi novel, first published in 2004, has been adapted into a play in English and staged live in London.
(…) I cannot over-emphasize the immense challenge of such a task (…) writing a play that can be performed by a single actress for one continuous hour.
(…) incredible energy and creativity.
Maath Alousi
(…) “Absent” is on its way to the English theatre. With my knowledge of avant-garde British drama, that was my happy moment. It seems that the time of truth has arrived where “Absent” will thrive on stage.
(…) At this point, I am reminded of the literature of “Group 47” of German writers that was founded to rectify the damage that hit the German culture during the Nazi reign before the Second World War, especially in "Tin Drum" by Gunter Grass.
Dr. Hamdan Dammag
(…) She tells the story in a stunningly cinematic style, describing scenes about daily encounters of the characters living under grim sanctions after many wars (and more that are coming).
(…) Its core message reaches you at the end, loud and clear, as you sigh with sorrow, certain of a truth you have always known: The tragedy of Iraq is your tragedy, O Arab — wherever you are, and wherever you may be.
Ali Shabo
(…) Adapting the novel “Absent” to go on stage is a very difficult task, but adapting it into a monodrama is undoubtedly a colossal task.
